Emmett (formerly Archie) is one lucky dog!  He came to us from a kill shelter in western VA.  He was emaciated and heartworm positive.  His foster parents adopted him and he found a great home with them and his yellow lab brother.  Shortly after his adoption, Emmett and his family moved to Germany.  Since Germany is such a dog-friendly country, Emmett gets to go shopping and to restaurants and pretty much everywhere with his family.  He just finished a European vacation.  The bottom picture was taken in Italy!  Think Emmett's family will adopt me.....?

Maddie came to RBR heartworm positive and pregnant.  She gave birth to 9 healthy boxer/lab mixes who all found wonderful homes.  She was treated for heartworms and adopted but, unfortunately, returned to RBR.  She spent almost 8 months on and off with RBR but she's finally found her forever home with a great family about 45 minutes south of Richmond, VA.  This picture of her on the beach shows just how happy she is to finally be home!

Adopting a Friend

If you are interested in adopting a dog, please fill out our Adoption Application. Email any questions to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  After your application has been approved and the home inspection is completed, you can take the dog home for a "trial adoption." Trial adoptions usually last 7 days but may last longer depending on the situation.  This is to make sure that the dog is the perfect fit for your family before you make the final decision to make him or her a family member. After the trial adoption, there is a contract to sign and an adoption fee of $150-325 depending on the age and breed/mix of the dog. Adoption fees for individual dogs are listed on their Petfinder sites. All dogs are adopted neutered, up to date with vaccinations, dewormed, microchipped, heartworm tested (if age appropriate) and started on flea and heartworm preventatives.

Adoption Fees

Below is a breakdown of what it costs to take care of the average boxer that enters foster care.
Spay/neuter surgery: $80
DAPP vaccine(s): $15 each
Rabies vaccine: $10
Microchip: $35
Dewormer: $20
Heartworm Test: $20
Flea/heartworm preventatives: $15 (per month)
Food for 1 month: $30

It costs over $200 to care for each HEALTHY boxer that enters foster care. Unfortunately, most dogs that come to us need some extra TLC.

Heartworm treatment: $350+
Mange treatments: $200-400
Antibiotics: $50-100
Leg amputation: $500+
Tail amputation: $300+

Our adoption fees and donations are the only sources of income we have and they allow us to continue rescuing boxers. Adoption fees for dogs under 6 months are $250-325. Dogs 6-18 months are $200-275. Dogs 18 months-6 years are $200-225. Dogs over 6 years of age are $150-175. Additional discounts will be given to senior citizens who adopt senior boxers (7 years or older).

If you are interested in adopting a dog, please fill out our Adoption Application.
